Regularly Scheduled Events

Tuesday Morning Birders. The Tuesday Morning Birders meets at 8:00 a.m. every Tuesday morning at the Tulsa Garden Center from November through March and at 7:30 a.m. April through October during Daylight Savings Time. Join us! Call Patty Moser, 252-2824.

 

First Saturday of every month. Bird with Oxley Nature Center Staff in Mohawk Park. Meet 8:00 a.m. at parking lot. Call 669-6644 for details.

Third Saturday, March through October. Oxley Nature Center Butterfly Walk, 10:30-12:00. Call 669-6644 for details.

Fourth Saturday, March through October. Oxley Nature Center Wildflower Walk, 10:30-11:00. Call 669-6644 for details.

Tulsa Audubon meetings. Meeting are held the third Tuesday of each month (except June-August,) are free and open to the public. Meet for snacks and social time at 7:00, program begins at 7:30 p.m.

Meetings are held at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria in Tulsa (click here for a map.)

with Ruth Beasley.  Ruth will present excerpts from her radio program devoted to birding by sound.  We will also play some sound games. See www.learningthebirds.com

 

October 2009

Oct. 17, Sun. Together Green Event - Deep Fork NWR Habitat Improvement and Big Sit. In conjunction with the Friends of the Deep Fork NWR we will be planting native plants, doing trail maintenance and cleaning, and participating in a Big Sit bird count. Breeding Bitterns and Rails in Oklahoma: Contradictions and Current Trends
with Eric Beck.  Eric is the director of Oklahoma’s Important Bird Area program.  He will share his knowledge of this elusive family of birds.

Nov. 8, Sun. TogetherGreen Volunteer Day, Ray Harral Nature Center in Broken Arrow. 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Join us to help plant native plants, install bluebird boxes and perform trail maintenance. Nov. 17, Tue. Society Meeting.
Bats of Oklahoma
with Dr. Bill Caire.  Dr. Caire is a mammologist with the University of Central Oklahoma’s Selman Living Laboratory.  He will share his knowledge of our only flying mammal.

Nov. 21, Sat. Field Trip, Sequoyah NWR and Strayhorn Landing at Lake Tenkiller. Contact leader Cyndie Browning at 918-492-5622 to RSVP and for more information. Ozark Plateau National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge manager will be meeting us to show us some of the newly opened areas in this refuge. Dec. 12, Sat. TogetherGreen Volunteer Day, Oxley Nature Center Habitat Improvement. 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Oxley parking lot. Join us to help remove invasive species from Oxley's habitats, and perform other work to improve Oxley's trails and ecosystems. Dec. 15, Tue. 7:30 p.m. Society Meeting - Annual Christmas Show and Tell Party. Attendees are invited to bring stories, slides, artifacts, or digital images (up to about 10) on any subject of general interest (birds, animals, travel, wildflowers, etc.) to share with the group. Members bring treats to share after the meeting.  Please contact Gail Storey, 742-2684 or  about your presentation. Please bring your digital photos on a CD or flash drive.

Jan. 19, Tue. Society Meeting - Wind power in Oklahoma with Jay Pruett.
Jay is the Director of Conservation for the Oklahoma Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.  He will discuss the impact that wind energy development can have on wildlife if done wrong.

Jan. 23, Sat. Field Trip, Sooner Lake. Leaders – Terry Mitchell and Cyndie Browning. Cyndie needs the names and addresses of all participants who want to go inside the plant fences no later than Jan 15th. Feb. 12-15 - Great Backyard Bird Count

Feb. 16, Tues. Society Meeting, Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge: a Birding Treasure with Kris Patton.  Kris is the director of Tishomingo, a favorite destination for Oklahoma birders.  It is a managed wetland, which attracts waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrants.

Feb. 20, Sat. Field Trip, Birds & Wine – Drumright Area & Tidal School Vineyards.  We will begin the day looking for raptors, sparrows and other wintering birds in the Drumright area, and then warm up with a visit Tidal School Vineyards for lunch and a winery tour. Mar. 16, Tue. Society Meeting, Sandhill Cranes on the Platte River with Jack Curran. Jack is an artist, photographer, and author from Arkansas.  He will be presenting beautiful and exciting photographs of Sandhill Cranes on their famous staging area in Nebraska.  He will bring copies of his book Jack Curran’s World of Books and donating a portion of the sales to TAS.

Sam is a graduate student in herpetology at the University of Tulsa and an excellent nature photographer.  He spent several years with the Roving Reptiles program.  He will share his knowledge of some of the members of the reptile family.

Meet at 6:30 p.m. at Washington Irving Park, located in Bixby on Memorial Drive, just before crossing the River. TAS will provide burgers, hot dogs, beverages, cups, plates, and eating utensils. Aug. 14, Sat. Purple Martin Festival

 

 

Oct. 4, Sat. Field Trip - Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Gardens.  Visit the site of the this new facility northwest of downtown Tulsa, still under development and help TAS develop a bird list for the Gardens as we walk the grounds, viewing birds and other wildlife. We will be meeting at the Garden's Visitor's Center at 8:30. Contact John Kennington, 918-809-6325.

Directions to Visitor's Center: From Hwy 412 exit at Gilcrease Museum Road. Go north to Apache Street. Turn west (left) on Apache, which eventually turns to the right and becomes 41st West Avenue. Stay on West 41st Avenue until the first left turn, which is 31st Street North. You'll see a Post Oak Lodge sign. Turn west (left) and continue to the Lodge entrance on the right. From there, watch for the signs directing you to the visitor's center. Click here for a map
